Setting Up DNS Records
DNS Records for BlitzPress Sites
Proper DNS configuration is essential for your site to be reachable and for services like email and SSL to work. This guide covers the DNS records you need for a BlitzPress-hosted site.
A Record (Required)
The A record points your domain to your server’s IP address:
| Type | Name | Value | TTL |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | @ | YOUR_SERVER_IP | 300 |
The @ symbol represents the root domain (e.g., example.com).
CNAME for WWW
To make www.example.com work, add a CNAME record:
| Type | Name | Value | TTL |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNAME | www | example.com | 300 |
MX Records for Email
If using BlitzPress’s built-in Postal mail server, add:
| Type | Name | Priority | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| MX | @ | 10 | mail.YOUR_DOMAIN |
Also add an A record for mail pointing to the same server IP.
TXT Records for Email Authentication
Add SPF and DKIM records to prevent your emails from being marked as spam:
| Type | Name | Value |
|---|---|---|
| TXT | @ | v=spf1 a mx ip4:YOUR_SERVER_IP ~all |
| TXT | postal._domainkey | (provided by Postal setup) |
TTL Values
TTL (Time To Live) controls how long DNS resolvers cache your records:
- 300 (5 min) — use during migration or when changes are expected
- 3600 (1 hour) — standard for stable records
- 86400 (24 hours) — use for records that rarely change
Verifying DNS Propagation
After making changes, verify with dig:
dig +short example.com A
dig +short www.example.com CNAME
dig +short example.com MX
dig +short example.com TXT
DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate globally, though most propagate within minutes to hours.
